In Lily Chow’s (1996) history of Chinese on unceded Indigenous landsoccupied by ‘British Columbia,’ she reported that on July 11th, 1880, when 473 Chinese workersarrived in Victoria, they were met with stone throwing and name-calling “chink,” “Mongolian”and “Celestial.”

During the late 19th century, the term ‘celestial’ was used as a pejorative term to insult Chinese immigrants and laborers. |
