还有一点，亲情关系淡漠，即使家人也常常不会互相支持——————也许这就是米国佬的电影里总是并且越来越高呼伐木累的原因？缺什么喊什么。
很多中国人特别老一辈相信米国父母会把18岁的孩子赶出家门让他们自力更生，实际上很多米国佬特别是白人是确实这么干的。

The “bootstraps” mentality is very common here, and very damaging. In my case, my Mom insisted I begin working in High School, but also insisted I pay that money to her as rent rather than save up to live on my own. I tried to go away to college, but had zero help and a grudging tolerance of the effort until finally I was forced to drop out due to a lack of funds and just work low level jobs to survive. Mom told me there was always McDonald’s: “You’re good enough to work there,” and her right-wing beliefs were that if you stayed several years at a drudge job and worked very hard, someone would magically come along and promote you eventually and that’s how you got ahead. If you weren’t rich, it’s because you were lazy.
Self-sufficiency is a good thing, but circumstances often mean that’s not going to be enough.
在一些关于boomers的话题中提到很多父母会放言要财产花光房产卖掉去老人院住，一分钱不给孩子留。
这种家庭关系的话当掉到斩杀线了确实很难求助家人。 |
