翻了翻朗文英英辞典，发现 avenge 和 revenge 的解释几乎完全一样啊。
revenge: n. something you do in order to punish someone who has harmed or offended you.
avenge: v. (literary) to do something to hurt or punish someone because  they have harmed or offended you.

主要的区别在于：revenge 作名词的时候居多，而 avenge 是个动词。

如果是语言演化中赋予的单词的独特涵义，那我是不知道的
不过按照查韦氏的同义词词典，两个词的动词词性解释是一样的
revenge   to punish in kind the wrongdoer responsible for    <a man who took matters into his own hands and revenged the death of his brother>
avenge    to punish in kind the wrongdoer responsible for    <a play about a prince who struggles to avenge his father's death>

又查了下韦氏的同义词反义词词典，确实有区别
avenge     suggests that the ends of justice are being served or another is being vindicated or a merited punishment is being administered  <avenged the insult to his honor>
revenge    implies a desire to retaliate or get even and therefore connotes states of malice,spite,or unwillingness to forgive   <angry determination to revenge herself for the slight>

“单纯的报私仇不能称作"avenge"，至少要是国仇家恨相统一以上级别的才行”但是这么解释似乎还是不妥的

我还说“冤冤相报何时了”，谁管你复仇正义不正义了，尼玛复仇去是找推，你推了人家老子，人家儿子来推你。
正义又不值钱，反派里叫正义的多了去了，没必要凭读者的主观感受去质疑人家的命名吧。
当然惊奇那样的因为是有明显的正反对比，你们可能会觉得，嗯，这两词的确有区别。

The main difference is that avenge is a verb and revenge is, almost always, a noun.

They both refer to repaying a wrong. Avenge is often used when talking about getting even with someone for the harm he or she did to someone you care about:
Susan swore to avenge the murder of her brother.

You can “take revenge” on someone or “extract revenge”:
When Peter became boss he took revenge on an old school bully by refusing him a job.
Revenge can be used as a verb but it seems rather old fashioned and is generally used with a reflexive pronoun:
Charles revenged himself on those who had burnt down his business.

Revenge is a bitterer emotion then avenge. Avenge is concerned with punishing a wrong in order to see that justice is done. Revenge is less concerned with justice and more with inflicting harm.
