Gabriela Robin is a singer and lyricist, credited for nonsensical and broken language lyrics and vocals on many songs composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno.
There is virtually no information available on Gabriela Robin, leading many to speculate that \"Gabriela Robin\" is a pseudonym used by Yoko Kanno herself.[citation needed] The fact that Robin seems to have done no work apart from Kanno or Kanno\'s husband, Hajime Mizoguchi, as well as the fact that some lyrics and vocals are credited to both Kanno and Robin in different sources, seems to support this theory. One may also note Kanno\'s refusal to speak of Robin, and Mizoguchi\'s response to questioning that Robin\'s identity and language are a \"company secret\".[citation needed] However, vocalist Ilaria Graziano, who works frequently with Yoko Kanno, has been cited as saying that Robin is a person separate from Kanno.
Some of the better-known soundtracks with performances by Robin are Cowboy Bebop, Jin-Roh, Macross Plus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Please Save My Earth, The Vision of Escaflowne, Earth Girl Arjuna, Genesis of Aquarion, Turn A Gundam and Wolf\'s Rain.
Arguments Against Robin\'s Existence
There exist several unequivocally real persons bearing the name \'Gabriela Robin,\' about whom information can be easily located on the Internet and elsewhere, including a Central American author and artist, a law student and a music producer. However, none of these individuals have admitted to being the Gabriela Robin who worked with Yoko Kanno.[citation needed]
Although Kanno continuously denies it, there is much evidence supporting the theory that she is actually Robin herself. A few facts to prove this are as follows.
* Robin has only ever appeared on tracks by Kanno or Mizoguchi.
* Kanno sings on Hajime Mizoguchi\'s solo album Aqua Colors in Paris. Someone with, at the very least, a very similar voice can be heard in the songs \"Torch Song\", \"Ring\" and \"Santi-U,\" all of which are accredited to Robin.
* In a Newtype interview about Macross Plus, Kanno states that she herself wrote the lyrics for Santi-U. The end credits of Macross Plus also support this, citing Kanno as the writer. On the CD, however, the lyrics are accredited to Robin.
* In an interview with Kanno regarding Cowboy Bebop Session #0, the Cowboy Bebop Vitaminless track \"Cats on Mars,\" sung by Robin, is heard playing in the background, allowing a precise comparison of Kanno and Robin\'s voices simultaneously. The voices sound as though they are identical.[citation needed]
* Kanno has denied she is a singer, stating that she cannot sing. However, since making this statement, she has appeared on her husband\'s album, as well as doing some of the vocals for her band The Seatbelts under her own name. GrandFunk.com, a company that Kanno works for, has also accredited her to singing a handful of commercials for them. A picture taken by Maaya Sakamoto depicting Kanno singing can be found here.
* The following is taken from an interview between Kanno and the magazine Japan Vibe:
JV: The colour of language also seems to be important in your work. You don\'t hesitate to use French (Macross Plus) or Russian (GITS:SAC), and even to invent new languages (Macross plus, Escaflowne) to illustrate your music.
YK: It\'s a very personal question. All I can say is that I don\'t speak any languages except English that I learned working in studios. If I like music, it\'s because it can express as many emotions as words, and perhaps more... So, when I lack words in Japanese to express a feeling, I look for another language. And if I don\'t find one with the correct colour, then I create a new one.
* In every single live performance of a song attributed to Robin, she has been replaced by other artists, such as Wuyontana, Maaya Sakamoto and Origa.
* In Macross Plus, an anime series on which Kanno provided the soundtrack, the singer Sharon Apple is a pseudonym for Myung Fang Lone, a character of the series. Myung created Sharon Apple to take the credit for her own singing, avoiding the spotlight herself. This perhaps inspired Kanno to create Robin, as it was while working on this project that Robin first appeared.
