He was a great astrologer, botanist, and alchemist during that time.
Paracelsus described the gnomi or gnomes as humanoid creatures who don’t like interacting with humans. And because of their unsociable personality, they only live underground. They are earth dwellers. As humans are free to move above the ground, the gnomes are just as free to move in their own territory.
As depicted today, gnomes are often thought of as the dwarfs of the famous fairytale Snow White. Though they are called dwarfs, they are also called gnomes because of the great influence of modern literature. Ever since modern literature became available, gnomes began to be used to decorate one’s garden. Gnomes are Earth spirits, dwelling underground and typically guarding mines or buried treasures. They were named by Paracelsus, a German physician and astrologer in the 1500’s, although creatures of this type are known from earlier cultures. Their name was likely an altered spelling of the Greek-to-Latin loan word gēnomos, “earth dweller.”
The coinage survived Paracelsus and was taken up in the next several centuries. While Paracelsus claimed Gnomes move through earth as men move through air, that idea was soon transformed to tunnels. Gnomes were regarded as earthy and ugly, the opposite of Fairies, who were lithe creatures of beauty and luminosity.
In the past century, this doughty underground spirit has become a generalised term for a kind of Earth Fairy, whose name is interchangeable with many similar creatures (Kobolds, Goblins, Brownies, etc.) The association with underground and mining has, for the most part, been lost. |
