INSTALLATION ISSUES
Microsoft DirectX™
Worms2 is supplied with the very latest revision of Microsoft DirectX™ 5 and DirectPlay™ 5.0a for Windows 95. After insertion of the CD the Worms2 launcher autorun program will give you an option to update your current version of DirectX™. We recommend that you install this to ensure the best available performance from the game. If the Worms2 launcher does not run the DirectX™ install option automatically a shortcut icon can be found for this facility within the main folder on the Worms2 CD.
Please note that due to DirectX™ requirements to run Worms2 under Windows NT4.0 you must have Service Pack 3 installed.
Customised Saved Settings
If for any reason you wish to uninstall Worms2, all custom made save files such as option, weapon, terrain and sound schemes will be retained within their respective designated folders. Worms2 uninstall will only remove the components that are specified within the original install procedure.
Laptop Based Systems
Because of the current wide variation of Laptop system hardware configurations we cannot therefore guarantee full compatibility with all types available.
System Hardware Alteration
When any alteration is made to your system hardware specifications we recommend that a reinstall of Worms2 and DirectX™ is performed. This will ensure that no errors occur due to possible hardware conflicts.
Multiple CD-ROM Drive Configurations
On systems comprising multiple CD-ROM configurations we recommend that the installation of Worms2 is performed from your primary CD drive. Most systems will comprise a sound line out connector cable from the primary CD drive that is attached to your soundcard for the playback of CD audio. If you are experiencing no playback of CD audio on a multiple CD-ROM system please check that your current CD drive letter within Windows control panel \\ multimedia properties \\ CD audio is correctly set.
CD-ROM Source Path
When playing Worms2 please ensure that you run the game from the CD-ROM drive which you performed the original installation procedure. Worms2 install writes specific source paths for access to CD-ROM files and you may encounter problems if this is not followed. Please note that post-install connection of any internal or external hard drives and CD drives will also change the drive letter and cause problems.
IN-GAME MODIFICATIONS
Slow-Motion Action Replay
In addition to the standard action replay, it is also possible to slow down the replay speed by pressing the 'S' key when a replay is in action. This can be toggled off with a further press of the ‘S’ key.
Worm Placement
When the game cannot place Worms in the current landscape, it will endeavour to place Worms either by placing a small girder in open space or by creating a hole in which to put the Worm. This process is automatic and is more likely to be used when encountering user-defined landscapes with little or too much land area.
Weapon Menu
When accessing the weapon icon menu clicking the right mouse button will toggle the display on or off for this particular feature. Selection is still required by moving the cursor on the weapon of your choice and clicking the left mouse button. You will be notified via the commentary panel as a confirmation to the actual weapon that you select.
Weapons Arriving As Reinforcements
When weapons are subject to delays (configurable in the weapon options) they will appear shaded in the Weapon selection box and the text of the weapon will be red. You are notified by the message system if Reinforcements arrive.
Border In Cavern Levels
A border will now be placed at the top of Cavern levels – this is to ensure that Worms can’t ‘cheat’. When editing levels of your own, you can specify that the level is a ‘Cavern Type’ in order to ensure it has a border.
An optional full border (completely encompassing the terrain) is available within the general options menu and, in effect, means that it is impossible for worms to drown. Please note that when round time elapses worms will drown if Sudden Sinking mode is enabled.
Game Status
The option to press ‘G’ to obtain a status of the game’s score has now been removed. This information is now on the panel which appears when you press Escape. Pressing Escape again will remove the panel.
MENU MODIFICATIONS
Quick-Start Games
We have provided the means to enjoy a quick game of Worms by clicking either of the two icons in the left corner of the main game menu. These icons enable you to play the computer or another person without setting all the relevant options. Quickstart games are played with the last terrain generated.
Configuration Menu
Worms2 uses the default system audio mixer to manage the volume settings of the sound effects and in-game music.
CD Audio Tracks
This section has now been simplified for ease of use. This section now only contains Play / Pause, Stop, Select All and Deselect All.
Team Pool
Select with left mouse button to enter your team into the Play Roster. Right mouse button enables you to enter your team details.
Random Worm Names
Click on the '?' boxes on the team creation dialog boxes in order to generate random names for teams and worms. This is a new feature for the hard of thinking.
Default Option & Weapon ‘Schemes’
We have provided a variety of different game and weapon schemes for you to experiment with. Note that there is no ‘Scheme’ information box as mentioned in the game documentation.
Rookie Option Set
This set as discussed in the manual is now labelled as ‘default’.
Standard Weapon Set
This set as discussed in the manual is now labelled as ‘default’.
Enable Secret Weapons
You can now turn the more powerful ‘super weapons’ on or off. They’re still quite rare, but more conservative players may prefer a more balanced game without them.
Extended Chat Box Editing
This facility enables the automatic closure of the chat box during a network game. Simply press one of the worm movement direction keys to close it.
Sudden Death Settings
The Sudden Death settings have been renamed but have the same functionality as described in the manual. To turn the land sink rate off in Sudden Death, select 0 pixels.
Terrain Editor
The middle terrain of the five visible is always the current selected game level and it’s unique code is displayed underneath – this is the terrain as it will appear in the game.
Additional options to alter the object code (which affects the placement of objects) and the amount of objects (zero to many) that will appear have also been added.
A selection of predefined game levels have been included with the game and can be loaded by accessing the drop-down load box at the bottom of the terrain editor screen.
Editing Terrains
Additional options to FILL TERRAIN and CLEAR TERRAIN have been added, as well as INVERT TERRAIN, which makes a negative image of the current terrain.
Terrain Code
Simply type a collection of characters and a unique landscape is generated for you! What kind of level would your birthday or dog’s name produce?
Artillery Mode
This special mode allows you to turn off all movement possibilities for your Worms, having them in fixed positions, like the very first basic Artillery games.
Continue on Same Landscape
This feature as discussed in the manual is no longer supported.
Gravity Settings
The settings for gravity as discussed in the manual are no longer applicable and are not used.
NOTES FOR NETWORK PLAY
Worms2 is supplied with the latest revision of Microsoft DirectX™ 5 and DirectPlay™ 5.0a. Please note that if you neglect to update to this revision on your system from a previous version of DirectX™ you will be unable to initialise network play. While in some cases it may be possible to commence network games of Worms2 under the Windows NT4.0 operating system we do not however recommend it.
General Information
• Worms2 supports connection methods under both IPX and TCP/IP protocols. These are accessible from the network connection screen. We do however recommend that if you have an IP address available that you choose TCP/IP protocol over IPX as your particular method of connection especially over LAN. This will enable you to ensure that you receive the maximum performance possible from your network games.
• Please note that Worms2 does not support Direct Cable Connection or Direct Modem Dialling but we may possibly cater for these in later revisions.
• If you encounter any network problems whatsoever please establish that you actually have a viable connection under your chosen protocol. We have listed basic details on possible causes and solutions under each protocol later in this section. However, if you are in any doubt at all on the reliability of your connection please contact your network administrator or ISP for assistance.
• If you are experiencing problems with connection it is possible that your network could include devices such as switches, routers, bridges or firewalls within its structure. In this instance you should contact your network administrator for a viable solution. Please note that these network structures may not affect the TCP/IP protocol ‘ping’ command but may prevent a connection under DirectPlay™ and this is a required resource for Worms2 network play.
• Ensure that the Host machine for network play has the highest specification and the fastest available network connection. As this machine manages information for the Client players you may experience possible slowdown or unacceptable game framerate if this is not followed.
• If you are experiencing slowdown or unacceptable game framerate with a large amount of players or spectators please reduce the level of entrants to the game accordingly.
• Although Worms2 will play via modem at less than 2400 bits per second we recommend to please ensure that your modem is set to the highest available speed for maximum performance.
• ALWAYS connect to the closest possible server available within your locale.
IPX Protocol LAN Connection
Please note that it is not possible to play a game of Worms2 under IPX protocol via the Internet. Although IPX can exist in some form on the Internet with the help of programs such as Kali, Worms2 will only work on true IPX networks. If you wish to play via the Internet please refer to the TCP/IP Protocol Connection later in this section.
It is strongly advisable that games are played under an identical IPX environment. Machines must have the same frame type and if possible the same network drivers. Worms2 has been tested extensively under drivers such as the Microsoft IPX / SPX compatible protocol and Novell IPX ODI protocol and these are highly recommended. You may experience incompatibility problems or a conflict between different manufacturer network drivers.
IPX Protocol LAN Connection Problems
It is important to check the properties of your network settings within your Windows control panel. You must ensure that this section has included within it an IPX/SPX compatible protocol. If this is not included you may alternatively require a Novell IntranetWare IPX 32bit protocol for your system.
TCP/IP Protocol LAN Connection
Connection under LAN is very simple as Worms2 will automatically look for IP addresses running the game.
TCP/IP Protocol Internet Connection
You need a TCP/IP connection (and a valid IP address, dynamic or fixed) in order to play via the Internet and connect to a Worms2 game server or other user via direct connection.
Server chat is supported only in rooms and not in the initial lobby.
TCP/IP Protocol Direct Connection Via Internet
Worms2 has this option to enable you to connect directly to a user who is hosting a game by entering their details with an appropriate IP address. Note that if you cannot connect to this specified address you should do so instead via a dedicated Worms2 server.
If you are using a dial-up account, it is likely that the IP address you have is not fixed and changes dynamically upon connection. In this particular case you would need to inform anyone wishing to connect to your game what the active IP address of your machine is. Similarly, please ensure that when connecting to a Worms2 game as a client you are aware that the IP address you are connecting to is deemed active. In either of these cases this can be easily established by a confirmation message through email, phone, or even a fax. Otherwise, you’ll find it easier to connect and play through one of the dedicated Worms2 servers.
TCP/IP Protocol Connection Problems
If you are experiencing problems with connection please find a few possible solutions below to alleviate your problem. Please note that if you are connecting via the Internet, some online services such as AOL or Compuserve may automatically have become inactive if you have not accessed for a given period. Note that if you cannot obtain an Internet connection at all then you should really contact your network administrator or ISP for a viable solution.
Ping Command
This basic command will allow you to establish if your IP address and other IP addresses are currently active and working. From the Windows startbar select ‘Run…’ and in the text box type:
ping 127.0.0.1
When selecting ‘OK’ a window should be displayed. If you receive a reply you have successfully looped a message from and then back to your machine. However if you receive a message such as ‘Destination host unreachable.’ then your TCP/IP configuration is incorrect.
After establishing that your own TCP/IP configuration is correct you need to find out if you can connect to other IP addresses. From the Windows startbar select ‘Run…’ and in the text box now type:
ping 195.92.16.10
Then, as before if you have received a reply you have just successfully sent a message to and from the Team17 Web Server. The majority of networked machines are actually addressed in name form. To verify that your TCP/IP configuration supports name resolving from the Windows startbar select ‘Run…’ and in the text box type:
ping www.team17.com
Winipcfg Command
In Worms2 your IP address can be obtained from within the network screen under your connected machine name. However on some systems, especially if you have two possible Internet connection methods such as a network card and a dial-up adapter you will have to use the winipcfg command to establish your active IP address. From the Windows startbar select ‘Run…’ and in the text box now type:
winipcfg
When selecting ‘OK’ a window should be displayed. This contains all the information relating to your IP configuration including your active IP address.
ACHIEVING OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE FROM THE GAME
As with the majority of other games that run under Windows operating system, you should ensure that you have the maximum amount of system resources available.
There are several ways in which you can maximise this;
• Run Worms2 directly after initialising your system.
• If you have less than 32Mb of system RAM, do not use large speech banks, or opt for the 11Khz sets (see later).
• Use a video card that has 2Mb or more of memory.
• Set your Windows desktop at a lower resolution and colour depth. The minimum requirement is 256 colours at 640x480 resolution.
• Set your Windows system fonts to small as you may experience menu display formatting problems with large or custom based fonts.
• Ensure that your hard-drive has enough free space should Windows need it to create virtual memory.
• Ensure that you are using the appropriate certified DirectX™ drivers for your video and sound card.
• Play Worms at a lower graphic detail level.
• Don’t install and run the game in compressed partitions if at all possible.
• Do not run the game in unison with background applications resident. Problems may occur especially with software that puts high demand on system resources or has scheduling options such as disk scanners, disk defragmenters or virus checkers.
• Do not minimise or task-switch during play; quit out of the game should you require access to the full resources available on your system. Worms2 is not designed to run at the same time as other major Windows titles and applications. Continually minimising and task-switching between Worms2 and other applications may lead to system problems due to the amount of resources required by Worms.
SPEECH BANKS
11Khz or 22Khz Samples
On installation you can select if you would like the 11Khz or 22Khz samples installed. The 11Khz samples occupy less memory and will improve the performance of the game, particularly if you have less than 32Mb of system RAM.
Upon installation, you are also offered the choice of which sample sets to install.
Speech Banks Over Network
If playing over a network, the program will look for soundbanks being used by remote opponents. If it cannot find the bank, then it will use the default sample set.
Sharing Speech Banks
You can drag speech banks into (and out of) the / DATA / WAV / SPEECH folder from the directory in which you installed the game. The program will automatically find any additional banks you place inside this directory. If the program cannot find a particular sample, it will load the default sound.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Matrox Millenium
There is a performance problem with some Matrox DirectDraw™ drivers; this will be seen as a dramatic slowdown when using weapons that destroy the background.
In order to fix this problem, please select one of the other MGA drivers that are supplied with Windows or check your supplier for an update on your graphics driver.
Matrox Mystique and Matrox Mystique 220
There is a performance problem during playback of FMV sequences at 16bit or 32bit colour depth. This is generally exhibited by slight corruption in the video colour palette. If you do experience this problem please revert to either 256 colour or 24bit colour from within your Windows display properties to alleviate the problem.
Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE-64
If you are experiencing problems, we recommend that the reverb option on your card is switched off.
