In 1604, two English ships, flying the Cross of St. George, met "a junk manned by Japanese and sailing under the flag of Hachiman... the God of War (Williams, 29). The encounter between the "sea dogs of England and the Japanese pirates" off the coast of Bintang, near Singapore, developed into a "most bloody" battle, with the short and thick-set wako trying to capture the English vessels, the Tiger and the Tiger's Whelp, but succeeding only in killing the captain of the former before being overwhelmed by the superior numbers and firepower of the British buccaneers. Badly mauled by grapeshot fired point blank into their midst by the British ship's guns, and with the bulkhead of their main cabin shattered, the Japanese pirates continued to fight to the very end, and only one of them was eventually captured alive as he jumped overboard. Held prisoner for the night, he was dragged out in the morning to be hanged. In the words of a witness, "this Japonian... broke the Rope and fell into the Sea. I cannot tell whether he swamme to the land or not." (Williams, 30).
