For the past two weeks, Marvel has released a series of Phil Noto-illustrated character-focused "Civil War II" teasers meant to get fans speculating on who's on Iron Man's side in the upcoming conflict written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by David Marquez, and who's teaming with Captain Marvel.
In the two latest "Civil War II" teasers, this time illustrated by Jim Cheung, quite a few of the heroes pick sides -- though keep in mind, in Marvel "Civil War" stories, allegiances can sometimes shift in the midst of the action.
As you can see from the teasers, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers -- the philosophical divide at the center of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's original "Civil War" from 2006 -- are once again on opposite sides. As are Steve Rogers and his current Captain America counterpart, Sam Wilson, who is siding with Iron Man on this one. Also on opposite teams -- Iron Man and his longtime friend James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine.
As depicted in the teasers, Captain Marvel's squad consists of Spectrum, She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Blue Marvel, Medusa, Captain America (Steve Rogers), Vision, War Machine and Spider-Man. Iron Man's backed up by Balck Widow, Deadpool, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Hulk, Hercules, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Thor, Miss America, Star-Lord and Daredevil.
Fitting with the "Protect the Future" and "Change the Future" taglines seen in the teasers, the crux of the "Civil War II" conflict revealed thus far is on whether or not heroes should, when granted the ability, stop crime before it happens -- with Captain Marvel on the pro side, and Iron Man opposed.
Though Jean Grey was at the center of one of Noto's "Civil War II" teasers and "Civil War II: X-Men" was the first tie-in series announced by Marvel, no characters with overt ties to the X-books are seen in these two teasers, other than Deadpool, with these rosters drawing more from the Avengers side of the Marvel Universe. Of course, these are just a couple dozen Marvel characters, with surely many more poised to get involved in the story.
"Civil War II" starts with a Free Comic Book Day prelude from Bendis and Cheung, available on Saturday, May 7 at participating retailers. The series starts with a #0 issue later that month from Bendis and Olivier Coipel, before the main series starts in June from the "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" and "Invincible Iron Man" creative team of Bendis and Marquez.
