The \'Maker\' series (RPG, Shooter, and Fighter) are utility programs that have been tooling around on consoles for some time with limited success. They do what they say: allow you to create your own RPG or fighting game. But the process takes time and patience, and with the instant gratification of a finished game sitting right next to a Maker, most of us bypass the creative process and get right to the good stuff. If the program were portable, though, and we could spend our commutes, plane rides, and road trips making a game, suddenly we have a lot more time to spare. As long as we have the ability to share our creations with other users -- or even upload to a console version to play the finished product on our TVs -- sign us up.

Bushido Blade was unlike any fighting game that had come before it, and, unfortunately, there hasn\'t been anything like it since (except for that disappointing sequel). Weapons-based combat, one hit kills, limb damage, no time limit… This is the game that added a layer of realism to the fighting game genre -- all it takes is a good strike to the head or torso to end a match. We\'d love a PSP version with online multiplayer battles.

The graphic adventure genre has been criminally ignored by handheld systems. The point-and-click interface would seem to be perfectly suited for the DS, but we could see it working well on the PSP, too. The DS\' dual screens would make it even easier to manage your inventory/actions on the bottom and monitor the environment on top. While there are dozens of great graphic adventures yearning for a handheld port, Sam & Max are on a roll with their recent episodic adventures. Hopefully, developer/publisher Telltale will capitalize on its success and really let Sam & Max Hit the Road.

Here\'s a no brainer. Why hasn\'t this already happened? Oh, right, because it\'s a first-party Microsoft game and they\'re not in the handheld business, yet. Well, we can dream, and we have visions of hexagons dancing in our heads. While including Hexic with the Xbox 360 didn\'t showcase the power of the console, it is an incredibly deep and addictive puzzle game -- the type of game you would expect to play on a handheld. Hexic was designed by Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov, so it only makes sense to honor the phenomenon of Tetris on the original Game Boy with a portable Hexic.

Real-time strategy games are another genre handheld developers should be scolded for ignoring. Either WarCraft II or StarCraft would be a beautiful sight to behold on the DS. While consoles are still struggling with adapting PC RTS controls, the DS\' touch screen would seem to solve many of these issues. Plus, console and PC gamers don\'t often overlap, so porting either of these excellent titles would introduce them to thousands of players who have not yet basked in their total awesomeness. To not have played the Craft RTS games is shameful, indeed, but that doesn\'t mean the offenders shouldn\'t have a chance to redeem themselves.

An homage, of sorts, to the great side-scrolling, 2D action games of yesteryear, Alien Hominid was actually released on the Game Boy Color in Europe. IGN is calling for an end to the discrimination of non-European handheld gamers by letting them play this amazing game away from their TVs and computers. The main Hominid game is cool enough, but even the PDA games would work great in short, on-the-go bursts. The only problems we foresee are the spontaneous outbursts of swear words in public places from people getting their ass kicked by this game. It is hard. It will make you curse.

We could see a handheld flOw finding a niche on the DS, similar to Electroplankton. Tilt functionality could be built into the cartridge, but the touch screen could also be put to use to guide your sea creature. Granted, part of the flOw experience is the THX-certified audio, which wouldn\'t be quite the same through the DS speakers (or the PSP, for that matter). But sometimes you have to make sacrifices in order to take your games outside, and we would much rather gaze at the beautiful seascapes of flOw than the dirty bus on the way to work.

Not only was Knights of the Old Republic one of the best Star Wars games ever, it was one of the best RPGs of all time. How sad, then, that there doesn\'t seem to be another KOTOR game on the way any time soon. Port the original over to handhelds, we say, and let us relive the experience on the go, or on the toilet (don\'t judge us!). The audio might have to be converted to text, but the general gameplay would be excellent on either the PSP\'s controls or the DS\' touch screen.

Of the lack of a Super Smash Bros. game on the DS, Peer Schneider said it best with: \"Its absence is an insult to the system.\" Truly, we would love to battle it out over the dual screens of the DS and take on our buds over local wireless or Nintendo\'s Wi-Fi network. The time is right for this game, as multiplayer gaming (local, at least) is such a breeze with the DS. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is one of the most anticipated titles for the Wii and probably convinced more than a few gamers to pick up the system. A portable version could do the same for the DS.
