普通丝袜通常在整个腿部施加的压力是均匀的，或者甚至在某些部位（如大腿上部）因为橡筋束带的存在而压力过大。这种均匀的、尤其是末端过紧的压力，会像止血带一样，压迫表层的血管和淋巴管，反而阻碍了血液和淋巴液向心脏的回流。

医用加压袜（弹力袜）给腿部一个梯度压力：压力从脚踝到大腿逐渐递减。脚踝处压力最大，向上逐渐减小。通过最大的脚踝压力帮助血液克服重力“向上”回流，有效减轻腿部肿胀、酸胀感，预防和治疗静脉曲张。
