《Steel Division: Normandy 44 is a realistic WW2 RTS coming this year》

Publisher Paradox Interactive andWargame/RUSE creators Eugen Systems are on a mission to make “the mostauthentic real-time tactical game” set in World War 2. At least, that’s howEugen’s Alexis Le Dressay introduced me to the upcoming Steel Division: Normandy44 in a Skype call filled with talk of impassible French hedgerows, the stressof being under machine gun fire, and making 1:1 scale maps from aerialphotography of Normandy taken during the actual conflict in question. It’s atall order, as historical accuracy doesn't always equate to enjoyable gameplay.But Le Dressay sounded inspired by that challenge.

Combat in Normandy ‘44 takes place at thedivision level. Rather than selecting a nation, you pick from a number of Alliedand Axis divisions that fought in Northern France near the close of the war(though the actual beach landings won’t be included), each with a unique unitroster and play style. Among the names dropped were the US 101st Airborne andthe German 12th SS, with England, France, Poland, Canada, and Scotland alsorepresented. Some nations have multiple divisions to choose from, with eachfalling into a broad category of armored, mechanized, or infantry.

While your division serves almost like adeck of cards that you select prior to a battle, the troops you will actuallybe taking into the field, called a Battlegroup, are 30-40 units chosen fromthis roster on a mission-by-mission basis. These can include anything from asuperheavy German Tiger tank (which are controlled individually), down to aplatoon of infantry (which are controlled as a group of roughly 10 riflemen ora single machine gun crew, rather than as individual units). These units willattempt to push and pull a dynamic front line that moves as you take and loseterrain, with victory points assigned based on how much of the map you control.

In addition to a singleplayer campaign,Normandy ‘44 will support up to 10 vs 10 in online multiplayer, with the mostcolossal brawls taking place on maps large enough that they can be broken intochunks and used piecemeal for smaller engagements. Ranked and casual matcheswill be available, across a “tremendous” number of maps. I wasn’t provided withany hard numbers, but Eugen assured me it would be “two to three times theusual” in similar games.

Each battle takes place in three phases,which is where one of the most interesting strategic elements comes in. Certainunits in your battlegroup will only be able to be deployed in certain phasesbased on their strategic speed, which is modeled after real-world logisticalrealities. You can’t, for instance, blitz the map off the starting line withheavy tanks. In the first phase, only your quickest and lightest units will beavailable.

The devs stressed that this gives certaindivisions distinct advantages and disadvantages that must be considered. The101st Airborne, for instance, can deploy quality infantry in phase one andseize a lot of territory quickly. However, the Airborne doesn't have as muchsupport coming in later phases, meaning they’ll have to hold onto their gainstooth-and-nail. The German Panzer Lehr, on the other hand, will struggle in theearly phases until their superheavy armor shows up for the grand finale toblast away all opposition. Since each phase matters in calculating ultimatevictory, not every match is going to come down to who has the bigger and betterarmy. A commander who **s for each phase properly and looks at the bigpicture can overcome what is, on paper, a superior force.

The core combat revolves around the conceptof stress. Similar to games like Company of Heroes, units will act withself-preservation based on the battlefield situation. Light infantry under firefrom a heavy machine gun will become pinned down, unable to move or contributemuch to the battle, which allows a smart commander to take units out of thefight indefinitely without necessarily routing or killing them. It is alsopossible, of course, to force a unit to take so much stress that they start towithdraw from the battlefield (or at least to a more defensible location). It’salso possible to capture enemy units by surrounding them and forcing them tosurrender.
这一段大概就是说诺曼底44也有或者说士气系统,有点类似COH,步兵被机枪压制会掉状态,严重的还会逃跑啊之类的。有趣的是最后一句话,这句话的意思是,你可以通过包围敌方单位并迫使其投降来占领该单位。(想起帝国2被西班牙牧师群包围的恐惧)

Key factors that influence unit stressinclude terrain, position, experience, and leadership. Terrain plays a largerole in each battle, and is largely modeled after actual aerial photographs(but tweaked in some areas for balance reasons). France’s large, densehedgerows present impassible barriers. Units can take cover both behindobstacles and inside fully-destructible buildings. Lighter forests, such asorchards, allow tanks to barrel through, crushing hapless apple trees all theway, while thicker areas of vegetation only allow infantry to pass and may beused to stage ambushes. Line of sight is elevation-based—a sniper in a churchtower is much more valuable than one in a valley.
这一段大意是在本游戏里地形很重要,地图很大,根据真实照片制作(因为平衡性问题经过些许修改)。建筑物可以被完全摧毁,有些地方坦克能过,而且坦克能碾树(红警2即视感),有些地方只有步兵能过。单位的视野线,或者叫他瞄准线或是火线是一个很重要的属性,注意挑选战场,不要让自己单位的瞄准线被遮挡。(因为在EUGEN的前系列作《战争游戏》当中都是只会掉漆不会被各种口径花式拆迁的魔法房子)


Experience isn’t something units earn inthe course of a match, but different available units in your division startwith different experience levels. Composing a battlegroup of the most hardenedtroops will cost a lot more, but experience has a large impact on a unit’sability to withstand stress and keep fighting. You can also bring along commandunits, which aren’t as good at fighting as their counterparts, but provide thebenefit of an extra experience level to all units in a small radius. The devswant commanders to be a tactical asset rather than a strategic one, applyingtheir bonuses only to a very small area rather than enabling any kind ofbattlefield-wide general abilities. In addition, units near a command squadwill ignore the normal penalties for being encircled, enabling daring escapadesbehind enemy lines.

Aircraft will also feature on thebattlefield, drawing from period accurate fighters, close air support, andlight bombers modeled with realistic speed and maneuverability stats. Heavybombers have been excluded, as they didn’t play much of a role in tacticalwarfare. Commanders will also be able to call in off-map artillery strikes, aswell as naval **rdments on coastal maps.

Modding tools are also **ned, with aparticular eye toward the World War 2 geeks who can’t stand having a patch on aBritish artillery officer’s uniform being in the wrong place. Paradox’s PeterCornelius also billed this as a way to fix the inevitable, “My grandpa’sdivision isn’t in the game” problem, indicating that division rostersthemselves will be fully customizable.

Eugen’s desire is to skew towardshistorical accuracy over what they referred to as the contrived,'rock-paper-scissors' balancing of other RTSes. Whether the three-phase battlesystem and strategic considerations will allow them to make such a detailedrecreation fun and balanced remains to be seen. We’ll be able to take commandof Steel Division: Normandy ‘44 some time later this year.

The new real-time strategy game from Eugen Systems, SteelDivision: Normandy 44, takes the genre back to the grit and brutality of theSecond World War. However, while the genre and setting might call to mind thenostalgia of classic WW2 RTS titles like Sudden Strike, Blitzkrieg andSoldiers: Heroes of World War II, its gameplay mechanics are shaping up to bejust as complex and deep as those of a grand strategy franchise like Hearts ofIron. Further to that end, Eugen Systems are partnering up with ParadoxInteractive, making this something of a strategy gaming dream team.

Historical accuracy is at the fore of Steel Division:Normandy 44, so much so that the game maps themselves have been put togetherusing recon photos from the conflict - every road, hedgerow and building existsas it would have done ahead of the Battle of Normandy. Eugen Systems aretoiling away creating over 400 units for the game, with variations for everynation involved in the conflict, all in the name of realism. Their mechanicsare designed to simulate the realistic ebb and flow of a real battle as well:there are suppression and stress mechanics, a total absence of health bars,elite units based on famous units from the battle and phases that simulate whattypes of units enter the fray at what stage of the battle.

Steel Division: Normandy 44 divisions师团系统

There’s a hint in the game title, but suffice it to saythat what sets Steel Division: Normandy 44 apart from grand strategy and RTSgames set during the Second World War is that the focus is on divisions ratherthan whole armies. Instead of choosing between the Allied or Axis armies, youchoose a specific division that would have been at the Battle of Normandy.
“In a tactical game you embody a colonel,” explainscreative director Alexis Le Dressay. “The main point is: from which division doyou belong? Belonging to a division is really important because all thedivisions are different. They have different units, elite units - they havedifferent military warfare.”
游戏中玩家并不是操控一个国家的整支军队,而是指挥一些具体的师团进行战斗,不同的师团有不同的单位和战斗方式

With a total of 18 different divisionsin the game, such as the US 101st Airborne Division and the 12th SS ArmouredDivision, there’s a lot of variation in the minute by minute gameplay, as wellas your options before starting a battle. If you pick the aforementioned US101st Airborne Division for example, you’ll only have access to two types oftank, but your infantry units are among the best in the game in terms ofstrength and depth. This makes you especially adept in the first phase of abattle, where your speed allows you to push and set up ambushes along thefrontline. You might struggle more in later phases where heavier hardware comesinto play, but if you do your job at the start of the battle you’ll have enoughof an advantage to hold out for a victory.

Alternatively, you can take control of theGerman 21st Panzer Division, one of Rommel’s divisions that spent the first twoyears of the war in Africa, and the only Panzer division to engage Alliedforces on the first day of the battle. Like every division in Steel Division:Normandy 44, the 21st Panzer Division has an ace in the hole: a captured USSherman Firefly tank. “As it is an armoured division,” says Le Dressay, “we’vegot a lot of slots in armoured and tank units. We’ve got a maximum of 36.”However, in the first phase of the battle however, we only have two slots forarmoured units - this is the same phase where infantry-led divisions like the101st excel - and Germany lack decent light tanks to use at this stage of thefight. Enter the captured US Sherman Firefly, which should provide the 21stwith a helping hand during Phase A without wasting two valuable Armoured slotsthat could be essential later on.

In this regard, Steel Division: Normandy 44shares some characteristics with MOBAs, inasmuch as divisions have strengths,weaknesses and specials, which make them more or less effective at differentstages of the game.

Steel Division: Normandy 44 multiplayer多人游戏

That MOBA comparison gains more traction whenyou consider how divisions work in multiplayer, where players can pickdivisions that complement one another during different battle phases.
“Not only does it depend on whoyou’re fighting,” explains Peter Cornelius, producer at Paradox Interactive,“but also your playstyle. When I played the Airborne I used a lot of artilleryand a lot of recon - it’s so different. And then of course when you play fourversus four, or more, ten versus ten, you have to really communicate with yourco-players. Like, ‘Okay, if you’re going to be armoured, I’ll get you afoothold in Phase A, I’ll cover you with artillery. You have to really thinkabout your combinations.”

Another interesting facet about how multiplayerchanges the game is how the map size varies. As you’d expect, the maps get muchlarger when you have more divisions on the playing field. However, theygenerally just get wider, rather than deeper. The reason for this is that EugenSystems don’t want players having to take their divisions on a road trip - theinteresting action is around the frontline.

Steel Division: Normandy 44 units单位特点

The concept of units and elite units won’t be abstract toanyone who’s played a strategy game before, but Steel Division: Normandy 44 ishoping to imbue its over 400 units with all the historical accuracy andcompositional variations of their real-world counterparts fighting at theBattle of Normandy. As such, Eugen Systems aren’t just drawing influence fromthe most obvious places like the German, US and British armies.
For example, if you choose a Polish division, all of theunits in that division are actually Polish, rather than re-skinned US units.The same goes for the game’s Scottish division, which is a unique band completewith its own elite units and strengths that will differ from those of a typicalBritish Army infantry division. Taking into consideration these nationaldifferences in a unit’s exact composition, Peter Cornelius estimates there tobe well over 600 units in the game.
其实这段并不是在说单位在玩法上的特点,而是说Eugen设计单位很认真很还原历史,比如波兰单位会说波兰语,而且每个国家之间的单位都会不太一样,总之设计了好几百个不尽相同的单位,不会让你觉得不同部队的单位之间只是换皮肤而已

(这个倒是Eugen一直贯彻的细节,战争游戏WarGame从初代EE开始所有国家的单位都有独立配音,虽然台词差不多,但确实用了不同语言来为各自阵营配音,特殊点的还有些国家的直升机单位会哼哼女武神的骑行来应景,以至于到了第三作RD中国登场之后,专门请了中国玩家为自己的阵营配音,还搞出了一堆非常接地气的台词,比如后勤单位偶尔会蹦出句“开门,顺丰快递”,侦查单位会悄悄的来句“狗剩,去看看那边,有什么动静么”,海军单位会非常豪迈的来句“次日漫辉天下泪,有公足壮海军威”等等,这都是真实存在于游戏当中的)

Steel Division: Normandy 44 phases阶段系统A battle in Steel Division: Normandy 44 takesplace over four distinct stages: Phase A, B and C as well as a deploymentphase. As this is a real-time strategy game, phases tick over as time goes by,with each phase running for ten minutes. The deployment phase is the only partof a battle that takes place out of real time. In this phase you can deployunits in zones, effectively letting you weight your attack around certainflanks. Next comes Phase A: in this phase you're limited in terms of how manyarmoured vehicles you can deploy, which makes this a great time to advance withinfantry and recon units that can establish your presence on the frontline.Phase B is when you’ll start rolling in light and medium tanks and strongerunits. Phase C is reserved for your heavy armour.
游戏里面的战斗分成四个阶段:部署阶段和ABC三个战斗阶段,每个战斗阶段10分钟(整场游戏约30分钟)
首先是部署阶段,可以部署你的单位在不同的出发点(玩过wargame的玩家应该懂)然后是A阶段,A阶段的主力是步兵和侦察单位,B阶段时解锁一些中型坦克和其他强一些的单位,C阶段解锁重坦的使用
(没有提到空军和炮兵怎么分阶段,不过应该也是差不多这个意思)

The reason for this is to replicate the real ebband flow of warfare in the Second World War. Throughout each phase you’ll earnpoints to spend on more units; in Phase A you won’t earn many points perminute, which limits your options when it comes to moving in armoured vehicles.By Phase C however, you’ll be earning huge numbers of points, meaning you’ll beable to deploy your best and most devastating units.
并且每个阶段的收入也不同,A阶段的收入较少,这样如果A阶段执意使用装甲单位就可能会缺钱,到了C阶段收入就最大化,可以比较轻松地部署更强的单位

Once again, this is all in the name of realism.“When we start we have 500 points that you can set,” explains Le Dressay. “Thenafter I will be granted 90 points each minute. In fact it’s 90 points dependingon each division - the division I’m facing only has 70. But then, you will goto Phase B. Phase A is the recon combat unit battle. Only the light units willbe available. The light vehicles, the light tanks. I’m not able to call inreinforcements. Then you go to Phase B - it’s getting bigger. This is depictingthe logistics to deploy all of this fighting force. Phase B is usuallyvery big tanks, very heavy tanks.”
又强调了一遍我们这是在还原历史,为什么我们要这样设计呢因为这样非常还原历史,一定能取得键盘军事家们的欢心:)

Steel Division: Normandy 44 suppression and stress压制系统(士气系统)

Two infantry units fighting itout, chipping away at each other’s health points until whoever opened firefirst emerges victorious, albeit battered. That’s not how war happens in thereal world, says Le Dressay. ”One thing we have in the game is this two-pacedgameplay. First thing, you try to prevent the enemy from shooting on you, byshooting on them a lot. Second thing, destroying it. What we wanted to preventwas to have was health bars and stuff like that - absolutely not realistic.”
Of course that doesn’t mean units won’t sustain losses, butit does mean that those losses are sustained in a much more realistic manner,and you don’t necessarily have to chip away at an enemy until they’re all deadas you can force them to surrender.
游戏里的单位并不是傻站着对射,然后看谁的HP先掉光,火力强大的一方射击另一方时会造成压制减少弱势方的反击能力,如果敌军没有被杀光,你可以运用这种压制迫使敌军投降


The system even applies to tanks, which can be forced toretreat by units that can’t even do any damage to them. The system differsslightly to the suppression mechanic that applied to infantry, this is allabout stressing armoured units out in order to temporarily force them out ofaction. “Say you are in a heavy tank,” says Cornelius, “and the enemy areshooting at you with some 20mm machine guns, they are not going to do jack tothat tank. You’re fine. But inside, all they hear is ‘DING DING DING DING DINGDING’. So they are going to get stressed. When a vehicle gets too stressed,it’s just like, ‘Crap, I’m out of here’, and they will just rout.”
Naturally, there’s a counter to this in the form ofcommanding units, which provides a morale boost to all nearby troops that makethem much harder to become stressed or pinned down. Likewise, more experiencedunits will not only be much harder to stress out, they will also get intoposition and take aim more quickly. It’s easy to see how a complex a singledivision can be.

Steel Division: Normandy 44 campaigns战役任务According to Le Dressay, Steel Division: Normandy 44 willhave three campaigns. “We have an American campaign, a German campaign and aBritish campaign. They are all depicting realistic operations. And campaignshave several missions that are all bound together. The units you have on thefirst mission, you have to take care not wasting them, because they arepersistent.”
That persistent element will no doubt make completing acampaign very, very difficult as you’ll have to manage your troops based onwhat dangers you might encounter later on in the campaign. There will bereinforcements, but certain reinforcements will be locked off at various pointsin each campaign to reflect the historical situation that was unfolding at thetime.
目前游戏里有三个国家的任务线:英美德三家。但是一条任务线里的任务是串联的,这意味着你可以保留之前任务的单位到下一个任务,当然如果损失太多也会造成后面的任务无兵可用,而且只有在一些特定的时候才会获得新单位增援(这里回归了《战争游戏》初代里的战役任务设定)

Watch the balance of powershifting in real time
观察地图控制权的实时变化
As the battle unfolds, the front line visually evolvesaccording to the players’ actions. Its motions draw a unique scenario with eachnew game and shape the balance of power. Your objective, as players, willalways be to expand your control over more ground: the front line demarcatingthe part of the map controlled by the enemy and one under your controlwill allow you to visualize your progression (or the enemy’s) in a glance.
Each unit counts and most of them can impact thefront line. When your units are advancing and securing more ground, the frontline evolves accordingly in real time. In the same way, the front line will bepushed back your way if the enemy regains the upper hand. The front lineunderlines the “hot spots” where the fightings rage and where you have todirect reinforcements in order to plug a gap or repel an enemy breakthrough.
玩家的目标是在战斗过程中使用单位扩大自己的控制范围,这会直观地显示在动态战线上,大部分单位都能影响战线的变化(接下段)

Butbeware: some units may approach, and even cross, the front line withoutimpacting it, and therefore without revealing themselves to the enemy.This adds a real depth to the mechanic. With anti-tank infantry teams such asbazooka or Panzerschreck or recons squads, you have the opportunity toplay sneaky. Of course, air units couldn’t care lass about whom owns the groundbelow (but for AA fire!) hence don’t affect the front lineeither. Paratroopers, on the other hand, can fight behind enemy lines withoutpenalties, unlike regular troops.
Inthe end, one courageous group of soldiers can make the difference.
但是有一些特殊的单位可以做到靠近甚至跨越战线而不会使战线变动,这样就能在战略上隐藏自身的行踪,这样的单位通常是步兵。而空中单位无法直接控制地面所以不能直接推进战线,而伞兵拥有在敌占区作战而不受惩罚的能力(其他普通单位就会有惩罚),所以一个单刀直入的秘密步兵小队可能会造成一些意想不到的好效果(大概是说偷防空啊偷火炮啊之类的)

Thefront line is also a tactical instrument that facilitates the understanding ofthe battlefield as a whole. This feature is what enables you to take a stepback and have a global view which helps you make the best decisions.
Everypart of the map has its importance now. You must choose what deserves yourattention. You must consider the most effective strategy at any given time,even if you have to deviate from your initial **, as losses grow oropportunities come to pass. Ingame events shape the front line in an alwaysunique way. Is it better to hold your position or attempt a breakthrough? Doyou have to abandon the “hedgerow hell” for some safer urban areas? Does atanks column forces you to withdraw?
Itsimplifies the action without making it simplistic. Indeed, if one playerpushes in one direction, it is impossible to tell the strength nor the numberof troops he’s bringing forward just by looking at the map. The opponent has tosee them through his units’ eyes. And in the hand of a sneaky player, the frontline can be a very good tool to misinform his opponent …
玩家要通过观察动态展现来思考全局形势,并做出相应的决策,地图的各部分都很重要,要学会放弃和选择,能看到战线的变动并不代表能看到正在推动战线的敌方单位,仍然需要用视野来侦察敌军的具体兵种和数量,因此除了不改变战线的秘密单位,战线的变化也可以用来欺骗对手(看不到具体的敌人的话就有被误导的可能)
(某种程度上这个动态线挺魔法的,毕竟能在战争迷雾下变化,但PVP的话确实是一种很有趣的心理震慑,法爹热衷于提高人类互相伤害的水平和深度hhhh)


Trapyour enemy
困住敌军(使之投降)
In Steel Division: Normandy 44,you don’t need to always kill your enemy to the last man, but with the goodmove, you can make them surrender.
Mostof the units outside the player’s influence area are in great danger. Theysuffer a stress penalty, and lose influence – visualized by a decreasing circlearound them. Again, some special units don’t suffer from this penalty, likeparatroopers, leaders or recons.
Worstcase scenario, your unit will surrender immediately if these conditions are met:
·The suppression gauge (in red) is full
·An enemy is nearby (100m)
·There is no ally (without stress)in the same radius (100m) and no leader   unit who can come to support within 200m (this number may change in the future)
Leaderunits support suppressed units and improve their stats inside their area ofeffect, avoiding therefore the frontline to crumble. Like in real combat, youalways want them to have your back. Leaders aren’t all-powerful though and theycan surrender as well if they get stressed.
其实玩家不需要杀死敌人所有的有生力量,也可以迫使他们投降,一般来说在玩家控制范围外的单位(就是在敌人控制区的)士气会一直减少,当然像伞兵、指挥、侦察这样的特别单位就不会受到惩罚
具体来说如果同时满足以下条件你的部队就会缴械投降了:
·压力表被充满(红色时)
·敌人在附近(100米内)
·在100米内也没有冷静的友军
·在200米内没有指挥单位,无法受到指挥的监督(距离可能会改动)
以上就是现在设定的投降条件,指挥单位能避免指挥范围内的下级单位投降,但是指挥本身受到过多火力压制也可能会投降
(实机演示中,投降的单位位置上面会出现白旗图标,并且直接提示被俘减员,然而前次提到的俘虏载具并没有出现,或许next week的直播会出现这个机制的演示)

如何做一个出色的战略家
Youmay need to secure your positions before pushing elsewhere: you don’t want tofight for the same place again and again because you were not careful enough.
Assimple as it may seem, don’t forget to regularly zoom out to really see how thematch is unfolding and to spot decisive confrontations.
Withsome experience, you’ll be an expert in reading the front line’s curves. Eachbend is well-thought and gives you some information about the forces involved.The more distant the front line is from your unit, the more distant the enemyunit is from its side, more or less. But don’t always trust everything you seeas more enemy units can be nearby, hidden or in support.
Salientsare therefore valuable information to decipher in order to lead your troops.This kind of situation is perfect to reach a breakthrough but also comes withits share of risks. If your units get bypassed and trapped in a pocket, theywill be more likely to get killed or captured. And breaking out in thesecircumstances is not the easiest thing to do.

目前流出的信息显示,大约30分钟一局,估计可以设定调长调短的,比如20分钟或者60分钟一局,TIME OUT以最终的KD比/占领分数来分胜负之类的

虽说是二战,而且说是师级,感觉战斗规模比较小,像是英雄连(营级)的感觉,一次能部署进入战场的单位也少(一分钟+100点左右,一个步兵班就要20点左右,一门75毫米榴弹炮就要100点,1辆巡航坦克是150点)

看了一下youtube上的视频,这游戏似乎多人团体战玩起来更有趣,10 VS 10 的地图,兵力刚刚好能填满一条战线,玩家间又有不大不小的空隙可以利用,相邻玩家间的协作体现出来了。
